Shoutcast FAQ
If you have any questions that are not answered in this FAQ - and are not a part of our Setup for Shoutcast broadcasters, please send us either an email or an IM in Second Life. Thank you.
Q: My broadcast software does not connect to the shoutcast server - why?
A: For check whether your stream was set up correctly or not, you can visit this page:
- Audio Streams currently activated (not necessarily streaming) Please click only ONCE and wait for loading...
If you can find your name in this table, your stream is already set up. The valid state message is Stream is currently down. - this does mean that your shoutcast server is running but there is currently no broadcasting source connected to it - thus the stream is not broadcasting.
Please check the following point before contacting the service personnel:
- Did you enter the server name (only the server name, without "http" and without the port number) in the right configuration field of your software?
- Did you double check the spelling of the server name?
- Is your PC resolving the server name (means: valid DNS running)? Try to "ping" the server to check your connectivity to the server.
- Did you double check the port number? Do you have a firewall activated that may block this port number? (Please note that the broadcasting port is usually n+1 - so your firewall should be configured to meet this requirement. (Skip this firewall topic if you do not have a firewall activated)
If you get at least a connection to the server the second error could be a wrong password - please see next FAQ item then...
Q: My broadcasting software always criticizes: Wrong password! Why?
A: The password from the floating text of the shoutcast voucher box is sometimes hard to read. Therefore the password is repeated in the object description field of the shoutcast voucher box. Select the box, go in edit mode and use copy/paste (Cntrl-C / Cntrl-V) to enter the password into the password field of your broadcasting software. This way you avoid typos.
Q: Need I be online for having the stream working?
A: Yes, Shoutcast is always about LIVE streaming. The shoutcast server always needs one source connected to broadcast anything. If one source (DJ) is going to disconnect from the shoutcast server (e.g. by turning off the PC), one other source may take over the stream for broadcasting given that this other person knows your connection data (server name, port number and password).
